{"id":1994,"date":"2017-04-13T19:03:39","date_gmt":"2017-04-13T19:03:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chuv.umontreal.ca\/english\/?p=1994"},"modified":"2019-09-18T15:47:59","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T15:47:59","slug":"the-chuv-and-the-granby-zoo-a-winning-collaboration-for-the-animals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chuv.umontreal.ca\/english\/the-chuv-and-the-granby-zoo-a-winning-collaboration-for-the-animals\/","title":{"rendered":"The CHUV and the Zoo de Granby: a winning collaboration for the animals!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h1><strong>The CHUV and the Zoo de Granby: a winning collaboration for the animals!<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For many years now, the Centre hospitalier universitaire v\u00e9t\u00e9rinaire (CHUV) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/zoodegranby.com\/en\/\">Zoo de Granby<\/a>\u00a0have collaborated together on a regular basis to share their specialists\u2019 expertise, to complete the service offer to the animals at the zoological institute and to allow the students from the Faculty of veterinary medicine exposure to zoological medicine.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]Within the framework of its preventive medicine program, the Zoo de Granby\u00a0performs many routine examinations to assure its animals\u2019 good health and to obtain baseline data about these animals. \u00a0\u00a0And so, the Zoo\u2019s team routinely takes x-rays in several species. As an example, imaging of the African elephants, the world\u2019s largest terrestrial species, implies certain technical challenges. Besides the Zoo\u2019s regular X-ray equipment, certain state of the art imaging systems from the CHUV allow for very high quality X-rays.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah, the Zoo\u2019s female African elephant, is 33 years old and weighs 3600 kg. Recently, a joint team from the Zoo and the CHUV took X-rays of her four feet. With the help of positive reinforcement, Sarah was trained by her keepers to place her feet in the right position on the X-ray cassette, therefore allowing for high quality images without delay and with complete collaboration from the animal who receives rewards thru-out the procedure. The images obtained with the CHUV\u2019s state of the art DR apparatus confirmed the wellbeing of Sarah\u2019s feet.<\/p>\n<p>The Zoo de Granby\u00a0is accredited by the <em>Association of Zoo and Aquariums<\/em>, therefore guaranteeing the highest standards of care for animals in North America.\u00a0The CHUV is part of the Faculty of veterinary medicine of the Universit\u00e9 de\u00a0Montr\u00e9al, the only veterinary faculty in Quebec.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1996&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221;][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1997&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] The CHUV and the Zoo de Granby: a winning collaboration for the animals!
