The new Centre of Excellence for Minimally Invasive Procedures (CEMIP), which will be established at Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al\u2019s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Saint-Hyacinthe in fall 2022 will see the addition of advanced interventional cardiology activities thanks to a financial contribution from Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Canada Inc.<\/p>\n

In support of advancing animal health by promoting minimally invasive procedures and training students in veterinary interventional medicine and cardiology, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Canada has made a financial contribution for the purchase of interventional cardiology equipment for use at CEMIP. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe lives of animals and humans are interconnected in deep and complex ways, and we know that when animals are healthy, humans are healthier too,\u201d said Dr. Michael Witt, Business Unit Director (Pet), Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Canada Inc. \u201cWe are pleased to support innovative approaches that help advance animal health and wellbeing, while also investing in veterinary education in Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Centre will specialize in treatment and veterinary education in minimally invasive procedures, an increasingly popular medical option that includes interventional radiology and cardiology and is linked with improved patient comfort and shorter recovery times. \u201cMinimally invasive procedures allow us to enter the body through natural routes and reach areas unattainable by standard surgery, such as the inside of the kidneys,\u201d explained Dr. Marilyn Dunn, professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and also the project\u2019s director.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe CEMIP will allow for a greater number of patients to be treated and provide a unique training experience for veterinary students servicing a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic options involving the respiratory, cardiovascular and urinary systems,\u201d Dunn said.<\/p>\n

“Thanks to the contribution of Boehringer Ingelheim, the CHUV cardiology team is joining forces with the CEMIP team to offer advanced interventional cardiovascular procedures. Among other things, the equipment acquired will enable us to obtain more realistic, three-dimensional images of the heart’s structures in order to better evaluate the therapeutic approach to be recommended,” said Dr. Marie-Claude B\u00e9langer, professor of internal medicine and cardiology and Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs and Professional Training at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.<\/p>\n

The construction start date of the Centre is to be announced soon.<\/p>\n
