Services offered at the Farm Animal Hospital

The farm animal Hospital offers specialized medicine and surgery services to farm animals by veterinary referral only. Our team mainly treats dairy and beef cattle but also sheep, goats, lamas, alpacas, deer and pigs. All medical and surgical treatments are provided by renowned specialists. Services offered at the farm animal Hospital include medicine, surgery, anesthesiology, theriogenology (reproduction) and medical imaging.

MEDICINE AND SURGERY

Over 60% of animals admitted to the farm animal Hospital are surgical cases. Cases referred to the CHUV are usually quite complex. The pathological conditions most often treated are digestive surgeries (displaced abomasum, rumenotomy, etc.), umbilical surgeries, teat lacerations, stenosis and removal of supernumerary teats from the main teat. We also perform uncommon surgeries such as nephrectomies which consist of removing a kidney, or intestinal resection following an obstruction.
The farm animal Hospital has five surgery tables. The surgeon can therefore choose to position in the animal standing, on its side or on its back depending on the pathology.

As in human surgery, laparoscopy is used in veterinary medicine, even in cows. A camera introduced into the abdomen allows us to diagnose certain conditions while avoiding large incisions. It is also possible to treat a displaced abomasum by laparoscopy, therefore minimizing surgical time while remaining minimally invasive.

The team at the farm animal Hospital has developed, over the years, a unique expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of cows that cannot get up, especially with the use of a pool.

A cow with a porthole in her stomach allows for transfaunation, the transfer of ruminal content to cows suffering from digestive problems.
