OUR BLOOD BANK

As in humans, dogs and cats can donate blood to save lives
To address the need for feline blood, the CHUV has its own cat colony. These cats are treated with the utter respect and care and once there mission is complete, they are adopted into families that have been hand-picked by our team.
For our canine blood donations, we depend on volunteer donations from dogs belonging to our clients to meet the demands. Canine blood is needed on a regular basis since blood products have limited storage times. Rigorous management of blood product stocks is therefore essential.

My dog, a hero!

The CHUVs blood bank recruits occasional donors amongst its canine clients. A donation from your dog could help to improve another dog’s condition or assure its survival.
Your hero will be immediately rewarded following his donation!
A canine blood donor must:

  • Have a good temperament
  • Be vaccinated and in good health
  • Be aged between 1 and 8 years old
  • Weigh more than 25 kg

Each blood donor will be submitted to a physical exam, during which its blood type will be determined. A dog corresponding to our selection criteria can the go on to give blood every six weeks as needed.
